What to we look for in a hand made soap:
1. Appearance: Looks always count, and appearance counts towards that essential first impression. Nice packaging is definitely important... and original packaging presupposes original formulation as well. Also look closely at the soap itself... it should look and feel rich and moist, rather than dry and crumbly (which suggests lye heaviness.)
2. Specific Labelling: You want to know what you are putting on your skin, so the ingredients should be clearly labelled, especially if you are paying a premium price. California Law will soon require ingredient labelling on all toiletries sold on the internet, so why not start now?
3. Weight: Federal law requires that all soap is labelled with an accurate minimum weight. Soaps lose 15% or more of their weight during curing, and many companies UNDERSTATE their weights by as much as an ounce or more! We weigh our soaps after they have cured at least 30 days, right before we label them, so you are assured the most accurate sizing possible.
4. Premium Ingredients: A premium product should have premium ingredients. We never use cheap filler oils like soybean, canola, safflower, peanut or lard which all have short shelf lives and are prone to rancidity. Every soap we make has some special ingredients, such as Jojoba oil, Macadamia Nut oil, Shea butter or Goat's milk in addition to lots of virgin olive oil and rice bran oil.
5. Foaming: Great foaming is accomplished by knowledgeable formulation. Moisturizing oils often sacrifice foaming, so we combine oils to make for the best combination of moisturizing, foaming and hardness. In addition to oils, we add wheat protein and a chelating agent to promote foaming, even in hard water.
6. Longevity: Knowledgeable formulation is a must to create a combination of oils which promote hardness without sacrificing emoliency. In addition to specific oil selection, we add sugar and sodium lactate (a derviative from milk) to increase moisturizing and hardness.
With these elements in mind, you can compare all soaps on this vast soap market... and shop with confidence.
